The Vichy Government in France

In June 1940, France was defeated by the Germans who invade the northern part of France ("Occupied zone") and leave the southern part for the French to govern ("Free zone"). At the time, my mother and I lived in the "free zone."

En juin 1940, la France est vaincue par les Allemands qui occupent la partie nord de la France ("zone occupée") et laissent aux Français le soin de gouverner le sud ("zone libre"). A l'époque, ma mère et moi, nous habitions la "zone libre".

Shortly after the defeat, the French, competing with their German masters, enact the Statute of the Jews aimed at "eliminating the Jews from the French economy." The Statute requires the census of the Jews and prohibits them from exercising professions which will either require capital assets or bring them in contact with the public. The census will be updated regularly until D day, and the personal documents of Jews will be stamped with the word JUIF (Jewish), thus making it practically impossible for them to blend into the French population without broad conspiracies.

Juste après la défaîte, les Français font de la surenchère à leurs maîtres allemands en promulguant le Statut des Juifs visant à "éliminer les Juifs de l'économie française". Le Statut exige que les Juifs se fassent recenser et leur interdit les professions dont l'exercise demande la possession de biens ou des contacts avec le public.  Le recensement sera mis à jour régulièrement jusqu'à la libération, et les papiers des Juifs seront tamponnés avec la mention JUIF, leur interdisant de ce fait de s'assimiler à la population française sans avoir recours à d'innombrables complicités .

In November 1942, the Germans invade the "free" zone to counter the allied landing in North Africa, across the Mediterranean sea. The Germans who are stretched out continue their hunt of the Jews, but they must now rely on the French to execute it. Although the French are sensing the German military misfortunes and become reluctant to fully collaborate, the French government continues to track the whereabouts of the Jews, thus making them vulnerable. In contrast with this newly found more "moderate" position of the administration, several vicious antisemitic groups take a more active part in the persecution of the Jews and serve as intermediaries between the now cautious administration and the Germans. Nevertheless, the police makes its census information available to the Jew hunters and the hunt continues.

En novembre 1942, les Allemands envahissent la zone "libre" afin de contrecarrer le débarquement des alliés en Afrique du Nord. Les Allemands qui sont débordés continuent leur chasse aux Juifs, mais ils doivent dès lors compter sur les Français pour en assurer l'exécution. Bien que les Français se rendent compte des déboires militaires allemands et deviennent réticents, le gouvernement français continue l'enregistrement du domicile des Juifs, les rendant de ce fait vulnérables. Contrairement à cette modération de dernière heure de l'administration, plusieurs groupes antisémites virulents prennent une part plus active à la persécution des Juifs et s'érigent en intermédiaires entre l'administration et les Allemands. Cependant, l'administration met ses recensements à la disposition des chasseurs de Juifs et la chasse continue.
